  • Compromise Joint Bar overview

A compromise joint bar, also known as a special joint bar or railroad joint bar, which is a railway connector used to join two different types of rails gauge side joint bars and outside joint bars. It includes four types: Left Out, Left Gauge, Right Gauge, and Right Out, ensuring a flat and smooth connection between the rails. These bars are particularly useful for connecting irregular rail sections, providing a seamless and secure connection.

Directional (Right or Left Hand) Compromise Rail Joint Bar

A directional compromise rail joint bar, whether right or left-hand, is a railway connector designed to accommodate variations in the width of the rail head between two sections. It allows for rail offsetting to align the gauge side, ensuring a seamless and stable connection at the joint.

To determine the orientation of a special joint bar, follow these steps:

    • Position yourself between the rails at the taller rail section.
    • Face the lower rail section.
    • The compromise rail joint to your right is identified as “right-handed.”
    • The compromise rail joint bar to your left is recognized as “left-handed.”
Non-Directional (Gauge or Field Side) Joint Bar

A non-directional joint bar functions as a railway connector when there are variations in the height of rail heads between two sections. It is also used when the difference in width of rail heads at the gauge point does not exceed 1/8 inch. The gauge point refers to the spot on the gauge side of the rail located exactly 5/8 inch below the top of the rail.
